Mary was born on the 24th January 1968. Mary Lou Retton was born with hip dysplasia. When she was about thirty-five she had a hip transplant.
She is an Olympic gold medalist for gymnastics. She was the first female gymnast from outside Europe to win the Olympic games. Mary Lou Retton was inspired by watching Nadia Comaneci on TV. Mary started gymnastics in her home town in Fairmont. She was coached by Gary Rafaloski.
She decided to move to Texas to be coached by the people who coached Nadia.
Mary Lou Retton soon began to make a name for herself in the USA, winning the American cup in 1983.
